Below is a list of items that depicted the
Victorian Era and its theme.
(Please note
this is for reference purposes only)
For the ladies:
- Ribbon sashes were favored on dresses,
either in the same colour or in a complimenting contrasting colour

- The “canezou spencer” or a
transparent, full collared, puffy sleeved over bodice made of sheer cotton,
lace, or white organdie that tucked into the sash at the waist
- The tippet of fur and the boa of ostrich
- Expensive long gloves that were white
or chamois-coloured
- Cashmere shawls were the “rage” and very costly and British Paisley
shawls were desired substitutes
- Bonnets and hats varied in shape and
fabrique, fashioned of straw, leghorn, silk plush velvet and felt lined with
taffeta. Long streamers of ribbon floated from the bonnet and at the ends
the ribbon was cut into many points.
- Caps of white muslin or black velvet edged with tulle, and turbans and
berets, and lace cap for under bonnets
All this headgear was ornamented with feathers, ribbons, flowers
(often roses) cockades, puffs and ruches, and several different combinations of
trimmings applied together
- High tortoise-shell combs to hold braided hair knots in place
- Large flaring fans of lace, gauze, or silk were worn in the hair to which
flowers or jeweled ornaments were added
- Cameo pins and pendants on black velvet
ribbons for neck and wrist, and gold lockets on neck chains
- Pearls and garnets set in bracelets, rings long earrings,
necklaces,
brooches and large ornate buckles
- When in mourning, hand-wrought silver jewelry was substituted for gold
- The soft slipper, with narrow ribbons
tied around the ankle and soft high shoes in ensemble matching colours
- Parasols and handkerchiefs, tiny
bouquets or tussie-mussies and small fans carried in the hand
- Floral and lace headdresses which intertwined into hairdos
- Tulle or net veils on hats or bands for the head
- Cloth top shoe leather vamp, laced on inner side that went inside shoes
- Bayadere scarf of velvet lace and
fringe
- Monocle on a black ribbon
- Handbags of silk on gilt frames with
beads, embroidered, appliquéd and painted; also velvet bags with fringe
with perfume containers
- Fur muffs and matching kid gloves and hats
Silk mantelets trimmed with lace
frills; lace mantelets (capes)
- Black silk and/or lace mittens (long gloves that exposed the fingers and
thumb)
- Coloured silk stockings
- Artificial flowers sewn on almost all apparel
- Jeweled hairpins, bandeaux and tiaras
- Tiny scent boxes of gold an silver were carried containing small sponges
saturated with perfume
- Beads, pearls, coral, amber, marcasite
and crystal jewelry-
- False lingerie under-sleeves
- Crinolines, crinoline cages, corsets and bustles, purple and red petticoats
- High heeled shoes laced or buttoned, congress boots
- Coats, mantles, and dolman wraps of heavy silk trimmed with jet, lace or
fringe; in winter, brown dyed sealskin coats, plush beaver collars and cuffs,
sable, ermine, mink, chinchilla and martin furs
- Hair drawn up toward the back away from
the face, exposing the ears, with the ends cascading down the back in
cadogan fashion, in ringlets or looped braids, bangs softened the brow and
curls in front of the ears
- Long earrings
- Crocheted /lace collars and cuffs

- Frilly lace Ascots for ladies
- Round mirror, powder and rouge cases in
metals of various sizes
- Square-shaped lorgnette (a magnifying
glass) with silk ribbon or chain to hang around the neck
- Black patent leather boots with tassels
and mid-heels
- Pannier (or overskirt), tunics and
peplums
- Stockings- which were never seen (in
bright colours)
- Silk petticoats in red and purple
colours
- Corsets, crinolines and bustles
- White satin slippers with artificial
flowers (often rosettes) attached or clipped on
