19th Century Men's Victorian-Edwardian Clothing and Accessories...

Below is a list of items that depicted the Victorian Era and its theme.

For the gentlemen:

  • Matching hats with tall crowns (high tops) and various shapes in brims; they were made of silk, felt, beaver fur, shaved or longhaired angora, straw; and colors were sometimes gray, beige, fawn, white and black and berets in velvet colors and black
  • Panama hat and fedora and various rich caps of all colors
  • High and low elegant boots of black leather, with or without tassels and turndown leather cuffs and used with silk or wool stockings (white or striped) also, silk socks in white, brown or black
  • Black silk slipper pumps with no heels
  • Laced up shoes and “gaiter shoes” with elastic over the instep
  • Cloth spatsA wonderful collection of antique watches... what a lovely addition to the victorian attire...
  • Front laced vests in matching or contrasting colors in silk, brocade and velvet
  • Muffling “bulky” cravat, sometimes two worn at once (one of lingerie lace & the other of black silk)
  • Cravats of bow ties and attached white collars (up or downturned)
  • Fancy collars with high points touching the cheeks, and Ascots made of colorful silks, novelty weaves, and laces
  • Bow ties of all kinds of fabrics and colors; some had attached standup or turn-down collars in white
  • Mufflers fastened with a stud or tie pin; muslin scarves (usually changed 3 times a day)
  • Modish muffs made of fabric filled with feathers; large fur pelts
  • Monogrammed handkerchiefs (about 18”square) of white linen and silk
  • Single lens or “monocle” with hanging fancy black cord
  • Purses of leather set in gilt mounts or of knitted silk worked with steel bands and tasseled ends
  • Snuff boxes usually metal and decorated
  • Sword sticks, short bamboo sticks, riding whips, and canes with ornate gold knobs
  • Brass, gold, pearl and matching glass and cloth buttons
  • Black “slipper” pump shoes with gold buckles
  • Shawls of cashmere, wool in plaids and dark colors (folded across the shoulders)
  • Diamond stud pins for cravat or one pearl stickpin
  • Shoe cloth made of leather (looked like socks with toecap and fit inside of shoes)
  • Tiny scent boxes with sponge for men’s cologne
  • Starched black scarf with attached white shirt collar and flat scarves of all colors
  • Chamois gloves, white & black silk gloves and leather gloves
