TEDDY BEARS

Victorian Teddy Bears Victorian Bears Boyd's Bear  ted

First made in 1902, the huggable, lovable teddy bear has an interesting origin. It is noted that they were first made after Theodore Roosevelt’s highly publicized hunting trip. Apparently, when he had refused to shoot a small bear that had strayed from its mother, the news traveled fast about the incident. Then, somewhat in the same fashion as the name “tennis bracelet” occurred when Chris Everett’s beautiful bracelet flew off her wrist during a tennis match; the namesake---Teddy’s bear--- became a created novelty too. It has, since then, also become a favorite plaything of children everywhere, and a collector’s item.

The very first teddy bears were fuzzy, stuffed with straw; a bit unrefined and had black shoe-button eyes. The pointed long muzzle, hump on the upper back and jointed limbs are a characteristic of the antique bears so avidly sought after by collectors. Later on, teddy bears were stuffed with wool or kapok, and were created with glass eyes and embroidered muzzles. There are hundreds of variations of piles and materials used for the so-called “fur” of the stuffed animal toys.

Unlike most other collector’s items that are desired in “mint condition”, many collectors of the teddy bear prefer to have them in as-found condition. Evidently, their tattered, chewed and hug-worn bodies are a tribute to the their lovability. Its appearance is a testimony to the years of child-style affection bestowed upon them and seems to add abundance to the bear’s charm.

The most valuable bears, including the original teddies, bears made before the mid-1940’s and certain commemorative or anniversary bears can cost hundreds of dollars in antique shops! But, one couldBears just love honey! search the flea markets, auctions, second-hand stores and frequent garage sales to find teddy bears and pay considerably less. Of course, it would take a diligent search!

Too, there are the well-known, modern day collectible bears for us to consider. Seems we just can’t get our “fill” of them! Perhaps you are an avid collector or someone who has just begun to notice how irresistible it is to acquire a teddy bear or two? Then, you can attest to the fact that they are just the most enchanting little treasures!

Our “beary friends” add so much charm to the home and happiness to those of us who see them. We suggest for display purposes that you “cuddle” up some of your endearing teddy bears in one spot. An old splint basket or new one like Victorian Bazaar’s Bloomin’ Basket is a perfect choice in which to display your little menagerie of teddy bears.

Incidentally, this may be a fine time for you to check out the teddy bears that we have for you here at Victorian Bazaar!
